Car Guide and Inspiration Used Car Review - Mitsubishi Montero Sport (2008-2015)-Cars Blogging

This best seller goes under the hands of Hubben Delcatro in its last hurrah.

2008-2015 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

History
Mitsubishi's Pajero/Montero/Shogun (whatever you call it around the world) is so popular in its home country some unrelated SUVs produced by the automaker are named after the Pajero. Recipients include the Strada/Triton based Pajero/Momtero/Shogun Sport and the Minica derived Pajero Mini (shorter version)/Junior (longer one) and its successor the Pajero iO. If there is one car similar to a political dynasty - hey it's election time! - prevalent, this would be the one. Right now, the smaller models were killed while the two larger ones remain.

As what we said above, the first generation Montero Sport (Challenger in Japan) was based from the same era Strada with parts sharing being common but the wheelbase is built from the second generation Pajero, making it a younger model in the hierarchy. The second generation model is now 100% derived from its pick-up truck sibling, especially the Pajero had gone larger and expensive. As with other PPVs, most Montero Sport models are assembled in Thailand while some local production are done in Bangladesh and India.

While the Philippine market had the first generation model launched in 2005 (whoever had it launched must be crazy, especially it was nearly 10 years old at that time), the second generation was introduced after it had a debut in the Moscow Auto Saloon in 2008. It had recipes for success: modern engines, good looks, and one important factor, a third row seat. So successful it dislodged the Toyota Fortuner in terms of sales from 2009 to 2013, but the title returned to Toyota the following year. At first, 4x4 models were made available which include the basic GLS and fully clothed GLS SE but 4x2 variants later followed which included the GLS and GLX. Numerous changes occurred throughout selling life, which will be discussed in these chapters.

Value and Costs
With this undercutting the Fortuner in terms of price, Montero Sport units are technically cheaper especially older units can be had for P660,000 while late models of the upper variants cost in the P1,200,000 range and expect to drop even further. When it comes to the variants, the base model would be the GLS 4x2 AT but was supplanted by the GLX 4x2 MT, which is technically the GLS but offered with a manual transmission. The GLS would receive an engine upgrade resulting to more power in 2011 and also killing the GLS SE infavor of the GT-V while the GLX and GLS MT 4x4 shouldered on until these were treated for more power and was renamed as GLX-V Limited and GLS-V respectively. For 2012, a GLS model with a 3.0 V6 gasoline engine was added while the GLX was resurrected as the entry level model. 2015 saw the launch of special edition models which added a larger touchscreen monitor (GLX), leather seats (GLS-V) or sunroof (GLS-V and GT-V), depending on the model. Updates occurred in January 2010, February 2011, October 2011, middle of 2013, November 2014, and August 2015 involving ether equipment additions, engine and transmission upgrades, or cosmetic changes.

Recalls were occurred in 2010 involving GLS and GLS SE models to check the proper tightening torque of the mounting bolts of the upper suspension arm and in 2013 for insufficient weld condition and power driver's seat. Other issues include the EGR valve due to low quality fuel for older models and for automatic transmission units, the inhibitor switch that may cause the transmission to pop to neutral to drive due to corrosion. Lastly the one thing to be wary about is the smoky nature of this vehicle, especially for 4D56 powered units. Oh, about that "sudden unintended acceleration" cases, these are attributed to driver errors so make sure to check your surroundings and if the floor mat bites the accelerator and if check if you are stepped on your brakes before shifting.

Exterior and Interior
No more boxy lines prevalent in the model it replaced, instead sharper lines from its pick-up truck sibling (without that awkward J-line) that flows smoothly to the rear comes standard. The GT-V sports a different grille that differentiates the models below it, it was ditched in a 2014 update. A 2015 update had later models gain body stickers and daytime running lights.

Inside, controls are within reach of the driver but other than that, it is utilitarian at best. Depending on the model and year, some variants gain a multi information display but replaced by a touch screen monitor while the radio for earlier models are a basic JVC head unit. Another change is the aircon vents for the rear occupants are situated in the side for pre-2012 models, with most facing front. For those who love to ride, do take note that the second row has an abundance of legroom but it is pushed by the wheel wells which renders poor seating position for third row occupants. Plethora of other interior equipment include paddle shifters (GLS-V and GT-V only), tire pressure monitor system, and later models get DVD and navigation system head units.

Engine
The first engine that we will discuss would be the one that powered the earlier models, which would be the 4M41 3.2 having 163hp at 3,500rpm and 343Nm at 2,000rpm. Next in line would be a 4D56 2.5 which gets 134hp at 3,500rpm and 314Nm at 2,000rpm for non-VGT models while those with VGT technology gain 176hp at 4,000rpm and 350Nm at 1,800-3,500rpm for automatics and 400Nm at 2,000-2,850rpm for manuals. The rare gasoline powerplant is a 6B31 3.0 V6 which possess 217hp at 6,250rpm and 281Nm at 4,000rpm. Let us discuss how these engines perform: the 2.5 non-VGT is decent enough for city driving and some occasional long drives but initial power is anemic and would do fine once the turbo kicks in, going for the 2.5 VGT will give you that sudden surge in the beginning, the 3.2 has ample power for overtaking and for highway driving, and the 3.0 gasoline gives you more refinement and power at the expense of fuel consumption.

Driving Impressions
Unlike other rivals whose ride quality will remind you of their origins, the Montero Sport's is smooth and comfortable. While there is ample power that inspires you to drive fast, body roll at high speed handling is prevalent especially that the suspension settings are tuned for comfort plus braking for VGT powered models would need more better brakes. While there is much power on tap, driving responsively is what we advise.

Verdict
Mitsubishi had a winner here, especially that it was amenity loaded, had a smooth ride, imposing looks, powerful engines, and priced well. Although there are some drawbacks, the Montero Sport is a good value if you are looking for a cheap second hand SUV.

The Good:
  • Comfortable
  • Wide range of variants
  • Cheap to buy
The Bad:
  • Body roll at high speeds
  • Not so spacious interior
  • Braking for high models
The Pick: 2.5 GLS/GLX is more than enough

Car Guide and Inspiration Car Features - 2005 versus 2015 Car Sales Figures (SPECIAL EDITION)-Cars Blogging

In this rare moment, we will be comparing car sales figures from 2005 and 2015. Within the span of 10 years, numerous brands had left and a lot had entered the scene, while buyers preferences and patterns had changed. We saw the resurgence of popularity of several segments and the decline of some, we saw high vehicle prices than it were before and we saw the addition of newer technologies fitted among today's cars. From just 95,000 units in 2005, estimates will see car sales above the 300,000 mark.

Let the infographs do the talking, here is our throwback special.

*2005 Getz sales pegged at 1,573 units.

Sub-compact vehicles back then are gaining traction 10 years ago but they are popular among passenger cars in 2015. While the Kia Picanto and Hyundai Getz start at entry level prices back then, these two started a much smaller category that catered to first time buyers and had the likes of Chevrolet, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, and Toyota enter on. The sub-compact category also had Ford, Hyundai, Mazda, and Nissan compete with known nameplates.

*2015 Lancer sales are pegged in 684 units, sorry about that.

While the sub-compact had increased sales nearly four times it did in 2005, the compacts had fallen to just below 10,000 units. Sure some of these cars had grew in size and engine displacement but their prices had gone expensive and near one popular segment in 2015. Only the Toyota Corolla Altis and Mazda 3 had fared well among the 2015 vetrans, the rest didn't although the Civic will be redesigned for 2016 while the Focus was updated in November 2015 for 2016 and the Lancer will shift to Japan importation.

Another category that had suffered falling sales, the mid-size decreased due to their pricing that match the likes of the mid-size SUVs and buyers flocking to these. Despite getting more sophisticated with features that are lifted from their luxury brethren and brands like Hyundai and Mazda getting more love for their entries, overall it fell down.

One of the popular categories 10 years ago, the MPV/AUV is led by the Toyota Innova, Mitsubishi Adventure, and Isuzu Crosswind. 10 years later, the big three stay afloat although the Crosswind experienced falling sales which may be the cause of the MU-X. The category also had the likes of Chevrolet, Kia, and Nissan enter while Toyota and Suzuki introduce their smaller MPVs to lure first time buyers.

Only the Suzuki Jimny is the sub-compact SUV sold 10 years ago, which slots below the Grand Vitara in the line-up. In 2015, the choices which targeted the ordinary consumer (the Jimny focuses on a niche market) had ballooned to five options and is expected to rise as more manufacturers are jumping to the scene.

*2015 CR-V sales are pegged at 1,068. Our apologies again.

The mid-2000s had different manufacturers bring in compact SUVs, especially that the excise tax on vehicles was rationalized in 2003 and made these affordable. However, notice that the three big sellers fell with the CR-V and X-Trail experiencing half sales in 2015 while the Escape had an 84% decrease since its shift to America CBU. Notice those in the bottom, as these experienced an increase in sales than they did 10 years ago.

In 2005, the Toyota Fortuner arrived and this vehicle had changed the vehicle landscape forever. Three years later the Mitsubishi Montero Sport was redesigned and toppled the leader. This category involving mid-size SUVs (Pickup Passenger Vehicle in other terms) became the other popular yet hotly contested category especially that buying patterns had shifted to these since the Fortuner, Montero Sport, and MU-X sold more than their MPVs in their stable. 2016 will see a redesigned models for Toyota and Mitsubishi and see how these will fare.

Catering to the upper class clientele due to their prices, the large SUV market had evolved to more options from different brands. While the stalwarts from Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are still favorites, other brands such as Ford and other Japanese brands are stealing market share. Do take note that the 2015 Trailblazer competes with the likes of the Fortuner and Montero Sport.

Back in 2005, van options which cater mostly to carrying people are set to five brands. In 2015, only two survived but these sold more than they did 10 years ago. Thanks to the popularity of UV Express vans nationwide, interest for these vans had increased especially these can accommodate 15 to 18 people. The Grand Starex, which rivals the two Japanese vans, can be seen in the infograph below.

*2015 Grand Starex sales pegged at 1,870 units.

Same fate with the category above, the minivans that yo can buy today are only a few when compared 10 years ago. Although the Previa's units sold here are numbered, the Carnival and Odyssey while the Alphard is a huge seller for such an expensive vehicle.

Another hotly contested category in 2015, especially most of the vehicles in that year were either upgraded or brand new. 10 years ago, the rivalry is between the Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Hilux since both were new while the others got under the knife later in their existence. Notice the Fuego's position, it was discontinued in 2003 but had outsold the Ranger and Strada.

Car Guide and Inspiration Car Features - The Pops and Flops of Noynoy's Administration-Cars Blogging

With the 2016 elections being just around the corner, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III will just be a regular citizen of the Philippines just like the rest of us. It was during his term car sales had boomed and reached levels of 200,000 and above, meaning more cars were sold to every Filipino out there. It also meant more car launches occurred from the mainstream ones to the high end cars that rich people can buy.

With more car launches, there are cars that had succeeded while some had miserably failed. In this feature article, we shall discover these vehicles from 2010 until 2015 (technically his term had started in June 30, 2010, but we shall count the first six months of the year) that were a hit or miss in terms of sales and market reception. One rule: only one hit or miss per year but numerous cars under one brand can fall if applicable. There are also runner-ups but only a maximum of six cars will be listed. Lastly, we will be focusing more on mainstream brands and less for luxury models.

This will be the first in a series per president going down to the administration of his mother, former president Corazon Aquino.

2010 HIT - Hyundai Tucson (December 2009 as 2010 model)

While the first generation Tucson was a sleeper hit, this one took Hyundai's sales to epic proportions in which waiting lists existed and you have to be in line to get this one. What is not to love here, especially it has that futuristic looks, an improved and high quality interior, and new engines come standard. In fact, it was the segment leader ever since.

Other hits: Toyota Alphard (August 2010), Hyundai Sonata (May 2010), Ford Fiesta (August 2010)

2010 MISS - Nissan Sentra 200 and Patrol Royale (April and June 2010)

Launched by two distributors (NMPI for Sentra, UMC for Patrol Royale) months apart, these two weren't hits by for a multitude of reasons and we shall list them per model. The Sentra 200 promised to replace the nearly decade old N14 based model but it was priced above a million bucks, no thanks from its Mexican importation, plus the vehicle's interior and space didn't befit the price. The Patrol Royale failed because apart from a gasoline engine, it was uber expensive plus not much marketing was done here.

Other misses: Nissan Murano (March 2010, another Nissan dominating this year), Nissan Teana (August 2010, yeah, make four Nissans already)

2011 HIT - Hyundai Elantra (April 2011)

It seemed that the earlier part of the decade was a lucky streak for Hyundai, especially that the Elantra sold well and took battles with industry stalwarts such as the Corolla and Civic. Plus an accolade as the Car of the Year Philippines made things brighter. Although things went smoothly, sales slowed down in 2014 when an update occurred.

Other hits: Mitsubishi Montero Sport update (VGT) (February 2011), Hyundai Accent (December 2010 as 2011 model)

2011 MISS - Chevrolet Traverse (October 2011)

There is a market for high end vehicles, and the Americans are popular for these (think Expedition and Suburban). Since the market had the money, manufacturers focusing on the mainstream market brought in high end vehicles. The Traverse may be a hit in the States, but not in the Philippines no thanks to one factor: a super expensive price plus its gasoline fed engine. The Explorer ate this car alive.

2012 HIT - Toyota 86 (June 2012)

Among the numerous car launches that graced 2012, we shall give the accolade to the Toyota 86, that one car which made the brand more fun to look at and gave people something that is affordable while remaining fun. It was discussed in various internet forums and in social media while enterprising sales people made ways on milking money to prospective customers.

Other hits: Hyundai Eon (March 2012), Kia Rio (January 2012), Chevrolet Trailblazer (October 2012), Ford Explorer (October 2011 as 2012 model)

2012 MISS - Suzuki Kizashi (April 2012)

Our favorite example of a flop car, the Kizashi was indeed a fine car. However, it falls flat on numerous aspects in which includes pricing and size. At P1.3M, you can get something larger or taller, especially these cars outsell this Suzuki despite their price. Size-wise, it falls between a compact and a mid-size, no wonder it failed to find buyers. Worldwide production stopped in 2015, plus resale values are one of the worst out there.

Other misses: Mazda 3 (April 2012), Mazda BT-50 (July 2012), Honda Civic (February 2012. it sold decently, but didn't get the cachet of its predecessors), Chevrolet Sonic (September 2012)

2013 HIT - Mitsubishi Mirage (November 2012 as 2013 model)

When teasers started in 2012 plus a sneak peek during the 2012 Philippine International Motor Show and numerous social media posts (indicating its target market) popped, the Mirage was a hit since the cheapest unit is just priced at P500k and offers generous interior space and more amenities for the price while remaining economical. It was also in 2013, where the Mirage G4 sedan got its launch and sold more than the Lancer.

Other hits: Mitsubishi Mirage G4 (October 2013, like we said above), Ford Ranger Wildtrak (April 2013), Vios (July 2013, as usual), Toyota FJ Cruiser (October 2013), Hyundai Accent Hatchback (February 2013)

2013 MISS - Chery revised line-up (April 2013)

Sure, they had a huge and grand exhibit in the 2013 Manila International Auto Show, but this did not translate well to sales ever since those first Chery QQs had gone one by one. They had a full line-up from a microvan to mini hatchbacks and somewhat upscale looking sedans, but having that Chinese stigma, people looked elsewhere. It would take an eternity for them to be successful again or pull-out like what had happened to Chana.

Other misses: BYD (September 2013, it did not take off)

2014 Hit - Isuzu MU-X (September 2014)

Replacing the slow selling Alterra, the MU-X became a threat to every PPV sold in the market at that time (and that includes its cousin, the Trailblazer). That period became a SUV market especially that some contemporaries were all new (TB) or updated (Fortuner, Montero Sport, Everest). Plus heavy marketing helped also sales, and also resulted to a phenomenon that rivals used to have before, long waits. As of today, supply had been stabilized. 2014 was an interesting year for new popular models, but we picked this especially that this category is the most contested.

Other hits: Toyota Wigo (February 2014), Toyota Corolla Altis (January 2014), Mazda 3 (April 2014), Ford Ecosport (January 2014), Suzuki Swift 1.2 (June 2014), Suzuki Ertiga (July 2014)

2014 Miss - Honda Brio and Brio Amaze (September 2014)

In other markets, it was promoted as an entry level car and was fitted with a 1.2 engine. Locally, they were priced above several rivals but that was because a City (previous generation) derived engine was fitted under their hoods. Entry level cars are an attractive proposition especially given the successes of the Mitsubishi Mirage/Mirage G4 and the Toyota Wigo, however this was a too much effort.

Other misses: Nissan Altima and Sylphy (both March 2014), BAIC (September 2014, another Chinese brand dominated this list)

2015 Hit - Honda Odyssey (March 2015)

The Philippine market used to have the US market Odyssey but it was a lukewarm seller. When the Japanese model arrived, many upper class people wanted one and it had created a long line for this van. We say it was more plushier and more exclusive looking than the model it replaced. The added bonus it was more cheaper to begin with and more suited to Asian tastes.

Other hits: Ford Everest (May 2015), Honda Mobilio (April 2015), Nissan NP300 Navara (February 2015), Nissan NV350 Urvan (June 2015)

2015 Miss - Kia Sorento and Forte (April and June 2015)

Columbian Autocar Corporation launched several new models in its stable (the Mahindra marque and several Peugeots) and one of them was Kia. While the Grand Carnival sold moderately, the third generation Sorento and the second generation Forte didn't sell well for a variety of reasons and lets discuss them per model. The Sorento was so plush enough with high end amenities including a panoramic sunroof but the price went out of reach and towards the bigger guys such as the Ford Explorer. On the case of the Forte, the first generation was a flop due to the price plus it was not marketed that much but the second generation repeats the same mistake, price may be too little high but marketing wasn't heavy.

Other misses: Foton Toplander (October 2015), Hyundai i20 Cross Sport (April 2015), Ford Escape (October 2014 as 2015 model), MG Cars (March 2015)
