Car Guide and Inspiration Used Car Review - Nissan Frontier Navara (2007-2015)-Cars Blogging

A throwback is an order for Hubben Delcatro, in which he reviews a truck that became popular back then.

2007-2015 Nissan Frontier Navara

History
Nissan started with the pick-up craze way back in 1934 under the Datsun name for Japanese consumption until it was exported worldwide after. The Nissan name first appeared in the 720 series until fully used (and ditching the Datsun brand in 1986 but revived 26 years later) in the D21 model. Replacing the rather aging Hardbody truck (D21 chassis), the Frontier was first launched in 1997 and still produced in some countries until now alongside the current model.

The second generation model, known internally as the D40 series, started production in October 2004 in which it graduated to the mid-size class in terms of exterior dimensions. This generation also paved way for a 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual, which was absent in its previous iterations. Suzuki sold the similar Equator pick-up from 2008 until 2010 in Canada or 2012 in USA which is virtually the same car but with a different badge.

In response to the modern competition, Universal Motors Corporation introduced the Frontier Navara (the older Frontier was sold as the Bravado mostly to fleets) in late 2007. The ace was the torque that it offered against direct rivals, in which rivals upped later on while the vehicle got old. It was replaced by the NP300 Navara in February 2011. Although it was initially available in both 4x2 and 4x4 versions, numerous spin-offs were added including a utilitarian Brute, Tech Xtreme, and Krome Edition.

Value and Costs
Currently, the cheapest Navara that you can find in the second hand market can set you P600,000 while later models are in the million bucks range, with their warranty being intact. We suggest that you stick with the normal models or the Brute if you can, unless you want more chrome bits or a navigation system and a socket for your pocket wi-fi.

Most Navaras' have a weak point in the EGR (located in the exhaust area that is connected to the engine) caused by mechanical failure and the turbo (a common problem among CRDi powered vehicles) especially when the owner does not have the habit of cooling down the engine or had used low quality fuel. Do check these out for a worry free driving.

Exterior and Interior
Measuring a little longer than its predecessor, the Navara looked longer than most competing trucks but looked lower than some rivals (not including lower models of competitors). If you look closer, the exterior resembles the North American exclusive Titan with its flank giving it a larger appearance. As a pick-up, rubber lining comes standard in the bumper, same goes with the bedliner in the bed. Do take note that the width and height of 4x2 models differ than those of its 4x4 counterparts.

Going inside, the interior is similar to a car than a rudimentary truck especially that it's seating position is more comfortable to be in. Tan is the color of the dashboard which makes you forget you are driving a truck, but grey would be much better though as to avoid any dirt. Good thing it gains more cubbyholes and storage bins for your stuff, a steering wheel similar to the 350z, and controls for the radio and aircon that are easy to use. For 4x4 models, the system can be engaged through a knob situated below the climate control.

Engine
Although the displacement and the engine codes are the same, power output and torque are different for both drivetrain. 4x2 models get the YD25DDTi in mid form with 142hp at 4,000rpm and 356Nm at 2,000rpm while 4x4 variants have the high version that produces 172hp at 4,000rpm and 403Nm at 2,000rpm. Power can be reached as low as 2,000rpm, thanks to a wider powerband that can benefit you in terms of fuel economy.

Driving Impressions
Driving this one will treat you to little body roll and riding comfort is similar to the Patrol SUV. A eight-cross member ladder frame gives the truck added stability and handling when it comes to mountain roads but steering feel is light (albeit numbing). All 4x4 models get a limited slip differential that is beneficial in off-roading situations.

Verdict
The pick-up truck race is a fierce one, especially that rivals outdo one another in terms of power, torque, and amenities. While rivals may have outpaced this one, the Navara can still hold its pace wrapped in a modern package while remaining true to its roots.

The Good:
  • Gobs of power and torque
  • Civilized than its predecessor
  • Car-like
The Bad:
  • Somewhat low ground clearance
  • Power may be lacking for some
  • Interior may get dirty
The Pick: 4x2 LE

Car Guide and Inspiration Used Car Review - Toyota Alphard (2010-2015)-Cars Blogging

Once a luxury van, it can be a bargain. Hubben Delcatro delves more of this car in this story.

2010-2015 Toyota Alphard

History
The Japanese are big fans of vans and MPVs of all sizes and price range. From the smallish Toyota Wish and Honda Stream to the luxurious Nissan El Grand, the Japanese have you covered. They value space and simplicity over else, since their streets aren't that wide to begin with.

Nissan's El Grand caught Toyota and Honda by surprise, in which they had pit in the Alphard and Elyson respectively. With Nissan having its second generation model launched in 2002, the other two introduced theirs during the same year period. Toyota's Alphard featured an electronic toll collection option for units with a navigation system, a hybrid version, and a telematics operation system called the G-BOOK. The first generation model lasted until 2008, with the second generation Alphard coming to the scene in April 2008 which gained a Vellfire model, a sportier model.

Due to requests from people (and somewhat its intended target market) who had seen this in some Asian countries like Japan and Hong Kong, Toyota Motor Philippines gave in to demand and launched the luxury van in 2010. Despite a stratospheric price of nearly P3,000,000, it was a success for the brand. The Vellfire didn't get its Philippine launch here, maybe because it may eat the Previa (whose popularity was starting to decline?) market.

Value and Costs
Good luck on finding a second generation model that costs below a million bucks. This Toyota can cost you for as low as P2,200,000 to P2,600,000 for later ones. High resale values are a charm of this van, which owners aren't letting them go of it. Most of the units sold are the 3.5 V6 models, with the 2.4 4-cylinder being a rare one (but we don't recommend buying it, more on this later).

Just like any van, check for worn-out parts like brakes (for such a large vehicle) and the rollers of the sliding doors. With this being a luxury oriented car, power amenities such as the sliding doors and power seats would have a tendency to break so look carefully if they give up before signing the bill. A prudent choice would be scouting at Toyota Pre-Owned's selection for full protection.

Exterior and Interior
Tall and elegant, these two words are to describe the Alphard's design. It does look luxurious without looking bulky (squint: Ford E150). They may look puny for such a big car but 16 inch wheels that contribute to a smooth ride come standard. Changing them may pose some risks so do it wisely. All models come with a dual sunroof, perfect during a night drive.

If there is a highlight of this vehicle, it would be going inside since the middle captain's chairs clad in leather come with ottoman and a foot rest that resembles the first class section of an airplane. The first two rows can recline using power controls, while third row occupants have to contend with manual adjustment. Other noteworthy features for a comfortable ride include cruise control, mood lighting, and Nano-E technology (Toyota's dust filter). While all gain DVD system, navigation system can be had for the 3.5 V6.

Engine
Just like in its home country, the Alphard can be had in two flavors (both are derived from the Camry): a 2AZ-FE 2.4 having 165hp at 6,000rpm and 227Nm at 4,000rpm was first made available with a 2GR-FE 3.5 displacing 271hp at 6,200rpm and 340Nm at 4,700rpm came a few months later. For all intents and reasons, go with the V6 since it can carry the van's weight well plus it is the common one. Unless you are scrimping with fuel, the 2.4 struggles with all the mass. Fuel efficiency isn't a strength, but if you can buy this one we assume you have the resources.

Driving Impressions
Both the driver and six passengers will feel at home at the Alphard. Thanks to its narrow body, navigating through city streets is a piece of cake plus a higher driver's seat coupled to a wide glass makes driving easier. The passengers would love its comfortable ride but can get choppy in some situations.

Verdict
The price to pay may not be cheap, but every peso is worth it. Especially its luxurious aura and its presence, the Alphard is a viable alternative to an American van. While you can drool over the third generation model, well you can get this for less.

The Good:
  • Smooth V6 engine
  • Luxurious interior
  • Easy to drive
The Bad:
  • No diesel engine
  • Choppy ride at some situations
  • Limited units in the market
The Pick: 3.5 V6

Car Guide and Inspiration Used Car Review - Hyundai Sonata (2010-2014)-Cars Blogging

This September, Hubben Delcatro discovers a premium sedan for a bargain price.

2010-2014 Hyundai Sonata

History
You may not know this but the original Sonata started as a luxurious version of the Hyundai Stellar, Since there is no any distinguishing factor between the two, sales plummeted and got killed in 1987, with the original model lingering for 10 more years. The second generation model made its debut in 1988 and the vehicle line emphasized on value for money content while evolving on reliability later on.

The fifth generation model (NF) which was produced from 2005 until 2010 may have been loaded with effort to compete with the industry's best but it was the model it succeeded it (the vehicle subject of this review) that broke ground and brought Hyundai to international acclaim. Sales started in September 2009 in their home country, before the launch of its production model. In some countries, the vehicle is called the i45 but was latter dropped in Australia and Columbia.

Previous Sonatas sold in the Philippine market weren't market successes, either the Japanese are leaders or due to limited supplies brought in. The 2010 Sonata became a hit for Hyundai locally, thanks to its handsome exterior, being feature loaded, and an attractive price. Sales where decent at start but fell later on. Available models include a base GLS and a more upscale GLS Premium with a Limited model having a 2.0 engine and the amenities of its upper brother became available in mid-2012. Coincidentally, the related Kia Optima was brought in 2012.

Value and Costs
Mid-size sedans are known for their low resale values, regardless of brand. For those more space and presence, a second hand Sonata can be obtained between P630,000 to P900,000 for later models. Majority of those sport the 2.4 engine, which was the volume seller.

Hyundai has a five year warranty, so getting a 2011 model would be a prudent pick to utilize the remaining chunk. Maintaining one may be higher than an Elantra but thanks to an onslaught of Korean vehicle parts shop, it makes things easier. Just like any mid-sizers, pay attention to any electrical issues since they are loaded with them.

Exterior and Interior
Alongside the Tucson, it received Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture which was noteworthy during its time. That alone makes the Sonata a standout in the sea of mid-sizers, despite its age which makes it fresh until now. Limited and GLS Premium are differentiated by its 18 inch wheels and a panoramic sunroof, as opposed to the 17 inch ones in the GLS.

Going inside, the interior is a step up but some nibbles persist like some low quality switchgear and the matte interior are scratch attractive. While these are small, be thankful that it has loads of amenities that can please both the driver and passenger that includes a cruise control, stability control, rear aircon vents, paddle shifters, push button start, and a panoramic sunroof (the last two items are only available in Limited and GLS Premium models).

Engine
Unlike the previous model, the diesel and V6 gasoline were chucked while the normally aspirated 2.4 remains. This Sonata gained options for a 2.0 turbo, a GDI engine, and a hybrid propulsion. Most units will have the Theta II 2.4 4-cylinder which produces 176hp at 6,000rpm and 228Nm at 4,000rpm while the Limited gains a 2.0 engine from the same family but plays with 163hp at 6,200rpm and 197Nm at 4,600rpm. Performance wise, both engines are sufficient enough on bringing the bulk of the vehicle.

Driving Impressions
It may not be a sports car (there's the Mazda 6 for this), especially that the suspension is a soft as a pillow and steering isn't geared towards sporty driving but what's important that body roll is more modulated and balanced. Visibility outside is decent, except for looking out the rear window which is small.

Verdict
Though past models aren't that outstanding, the 2010 Sonata turns down that notion. It can compete squarely against established rivals by offering high levels of refinement and amenities. Far from perfect, it can get to their levels slowly.

The Good:
  • Feature loaded
  • Good looking
  • Balanced body roll
The Bad:
  • Some cheap touches
  • Soft suspension not for all
  • Good luck if the electronic gadgets fail
The Pick: GLS Premium, its now a bargain

THE SPECS
Engine: 1,998cc and 2,359cc Theta II I4 gasoline
Power: 163hp @ 6,200rpm (2.0), 176hp @ 6,000rpm (2.4)
Torque: 197Nm @ 4,600rpm (2.0), 228Nm @ 4,000rpm (2.4)

Car Guide and Inspiration Recall Alert - Honda Philippines Recalls Civic, City, Jazz, and CR-V-Cars Blogging

Last month, Honda had issued a recall involving Accords and Pilots in which it was a preventive measure to avoid any future incident related to a suspected defect in the airbag deflator of the driver side airbag. Now, this preventive measure done voluntarily had also expanded to selected 2007 to 2011 CR-V, 2006 and 2009 to 2012 Jazz, 2006 to 2011 Civic, 2003 to 2011 City, and 2011 to 2012 Insight (2 of them are included, we had no clue who are the owners here). With this involving thousands of units, owners read this one carefully.

Similar to last time's recall, this one involved more popular and mainstream Honda models and with the saying goes that prevention is better than cure, the Japanese brand will make a remedy before things get worse.

Although no incidents related to this issue had been reported yet, Honda's announcement is part of their efforts to ensure the safety of their customers and encourages to bring their units to their nearest dealers for repairs that will take an hour and it is free of charge.

Repairs had started last September 14, 2015, with affected owners being requested to contact their nearest Honda dealership.

To check if your vehicle is affected, you may check the vehicle identification number at http://hondaphil.com/news/preventive-measure-campaign/
